Meet Dee Lucas - A National Recording Artist & Saxophonist Coming to Charlotte This Weekend
This weekend brings an incredible treat to the Queen City for all of the area’s Jazz fans. On Friday 10/11, national recording artist and saxophonist, Dee Lucas, will be accompanied by vocalist and pianist, Persona Bell, when the two perform at the Stage Door Theater in Uptown Charlotte.
Lucas has released eight solo albums which can be found on Spotify and other streaming platforms. As described by Scott O’Brien of Smoothjazz.com, Lucas has been able to “re-create the instantly recognizable style and legacy of George Howard, while at the same time putting his own unique signature on each fresh, new performance.” This Friday will be Charlotte’s very own fresh, new performance.
Lucas has opened for several accomplished musicians, including Boney James, Norman Brown and Ronnie Laws, among many others. Originally from Georgia, Lucas returns to Charlotte, NC for the first time in a few years, and the concert is set to be an intimate evening and can’t-miss event for all Jazz aficionados. We recently had the chance to connect with Lucas ahead of his upcoming performance in the QC, and he took the time to answer some questions for us. Check out what he had to say below, and don’t miss his show this Friday.

How often do you perform in Charlotte?
“This will be my first appearance in Charlotte in recent years. I do have fond memories of performing back in the day at this place called The Jazz Cafe. It was a really cool and classy spot.”
If you could tour with any other musician or band, who would it be and why?
“I have been very blessed to perform on the same ticket with many great artists. However, I would love to either tour or play onstage with guitarist Norman Brown because of the energy he brings to his live shows.”
Who or what inspires you to keep performing?
“The fans man…pure and simple. I meet new fans either directly or via social media, and it’s motivation in itself to hear how they embrace or respond my art.”
Where and when was your favorite show that you have performed thus far?
“It’s hard to say honestly, because I take every show with sincerity regardless of size of venue, mood, or environment. I mean, performing in a small intimate setting is just as satisfying and exciting as performing in front of thousands at a festival. As an artist, I remind myself to appreciate the moment.”
What is next for you in your music career?
“More music is on the horizon; while, I will continue to grow as an artist.”
Is there anything additional you want to highlight about your musical journey, your upcoming show, or anything else?
“As a true self-taught artist, I have been more than blessed and grateful to have released 8 albums worldwide to date. In some ways, it seems like I have been on this journey for a long time. But in the same token, it feels like yesterday when I first purchased a saxophone to kickstart my career. Either way, I am very blessed and fortunate to be a part of the journey.”
